Chelmsford Recycling Committee unanimously backs two state bottle bills. The committee endorsed H.3464 and S.2235, which would raise the container deposit from 5 cents to 10 cents and expand coverage to additional container types in order to reduce litter and improve redemption rates. Sustainability Manager Chris Haley reported February recycling tonnage at 296.22 tons with 133 households in the curbside compost program; contamination currently runs at 10 percent by weight, with recycling costs rising to $149 per ton.
The committee continues surveying food establishments on switching from black plastic to compostable containers, with results due by the end of April and a warrant article expected in June.
