Tree Committee confirms native species lists for town programs

CHELMSFORD — The Chelmsford Tree Committee confirmed native and climate-resilient tree species for front yard and memorial programs. The front yard initiative, backed by a $50,000 to $60,000 state grant, has already fielded 50 to 60 applications ahead of its January 19 launch and will vet requests in order of receipt subject to planting criteria requiring 30-foot clearance and proximity within 20 feet of the road. The memorial tree program, announced in November, has received one inquiry to date and will use new, larger engraved plaques on posts.
Senior volunteers will water 2025-planted trees beginning in May, with the Tree Warden considering a third hire. The committee proposed a formal communication plan with four annual articles, mailing inserts, television presence, and social media engagement, and will pursue consultant-led invasive species assessment using approved Town Meeting funding.
