Chelmsford's Vinal Square Committee Picks Pocket-Park Clock Design, Shifts to Artificial Plants

CHELMSFORD -- April 6, 2026, Chelmsford's Vinal Square Committee advances clock tower installation for April 29 and moves to artificial plants. The Vinal Square Strategic Action Plan Committee, chaired by Bill Gillette, selected the "concept two" pocket-park layout for the upcoming clock tower installation, accepting the loss of two parking spaces in exchange for a raised curb that better protects the clock from vehicle traffic. Christine Clancy of the Department of Public Works confirmed that dig-safe clearance is in place, electrical work begins the week of April 13, and the clock goes in April 29. Donor plaques will follow at a later date. On plantings, the committee agreed in principle to purchase artificial evergreens and florals for its 12 white and four black planters, estimated at $500 to $600, after acknowledging that all live arborvitaes in the square have died and that the committee lacks the eight to 12 weekly summer volunteers needed to keep live plants alive; the revolving fund holds just over $5,000. Gillette is in discussions about timing a clock unveiling ceremony to coincide with the Memorial Day parade in North Chelmsford, contingent on coordination with the Veterans organization that sponsors the post-parade event at North Town Hall.
